About the Artist
Paul Bonelli was born and raised in northern New Jersey, and now resides in the state's
shore region. He studied art at the College of William and Mary, Montclair State University, and most recently at Southern
Illinois University-Carbondale, where he earned an MFA in printmaking in 1995. The
woodcut print has been his primary medium of expression for the past 24 years. His woodcut prints have been exhibited
in numerous solo and group exhibitions in his home state, as well as other regions of the country, and are included in several
important print collections. In addition to his positions
as an adjunct professor of art at Kean University in Union, NJ, and as an adjunct assistant professor at Ocean County
College in Toms River, NJ, the artist has demonstrated his art and techniques at colleges and art centers around the country,
and at the Printmaking Council of New Jersey.

Artist Statement
If there is a common aspect to all my work, it is that it is all about stuff
that interests me, everything from biology, to history, to religion, to popular culture. Much of my imagery is of common objects
and situations, but with themes that go beyond mere representation. Above all, I try to make art that works on a purely visual
level, so viewers can appreciate my work even if they don't know or understand the background. People usually classify my
visual style as a cross between pop and expressionism, which fits in with my main influences being comic books, mid 20th century
animation, Frans Masereel, and the German Expressionists. I work in the medium of woodcut because I enjoy the process and
because some of its inherent qualities, such as simplicity of message and availability to the masses, well suit my approach
to art.
